Our cuisine is inspired by the Northern Italian cuisine of our mother, Rosa, who still cooks the meals we love – polenta, gnocchi, and rich meaty ragus with basil from her garden. Homemade prosciutto, salami and sausages made by our parents each Easter; the wine our father fermented from grapes bought at the Queen Victoria Market; the plates of calamari fritti served up as a family dinnertime “treat”.

This clever suitor employs slow-buring charm. First impression: handsome, debonair, a prestigious address. Somewhere between red leather banquettes and the clink of corporate high-flyers glasses, attraction begins. With house-cured ocean trout, or distinctive offal dishes, such as the char-grilled veal tongue with white anchovies, you sense a solid style; no stutting its stuff with arty presentation but focusing on its core intent : to woo you with excellent food.

The pursuit deepens with thick, char-grilled porterhouse, melted gorgonzola smeaerd on top and worked, with aoili, into rocket salad. Ligurian seafood stew excites with a sublime sauce containing saffron, chilli, lives and vermouth. Pastas include beef-cheek ravioli with a cavalier dollop of thick tomato sauce. You can almost feel the Latin lover finally allowing itself a roguish smirk of conquest with its devastatingly seductive tiramasu, and the panna cotta, smooth yet twinkling with mint, You’re smitten.

…the sprawling tiered space, leafy courtyard and concierge-quality service create a comfortable, even romantic air. Choices are dizzying, with 13 entrees, 17 mains and eight daily specials including 3 oyster varieties and salumi made exclusively…Panned pink-centered veal slices, scattered baby capers, tuna and house-made grissini take vitello tonnato to princely heights. An ox cheek ravioli makes for a full bodied, al dente package, whilst the burnt orange sauce of the twice cooked duck is sweetly smooth and nicely countered by the crunch of pancetta batons and savoy cabbage. Also impressive is the 450-strong list of wines, wowing with back vintages and iconic labels.
